New Delhi, Aug 16: Late former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's mortal remains will be kept at the Delhi headquarters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) till tomorrow. The last rites are scheduled to be held at Vijay Ghat, the memorial of India's second Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri.
The body of Vajpayee will be first taken to his Delhi-based residence, where he was residing over the past decade, before being taken to the BJP HQ. Supporters and well-wishers of the deceased leader will be allowed to pay homage to the former PM today at his residence, whereas, the mortal remains will be viewed to them tomorrow at the party headquarters.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee Funeral Schedule, Date and Time
- Mortal remains are expected to be taken to Vajpayee's residence in Delhi shortly. The final tributes could be paid by his supporters between 6:30am to 8:30am in the morning.
- After final tributes are paid, the body will be taken to the BJP headquarters.
- The funeral procession will begin at 1pm. The last rites will be held at Smriti Sthal at 4pm. Millions of supporters and BJP workers are expected to join the funeral procession in Delhi.
- A seven-day mourning will be observed, announced the government to grieve the demise of Vajpayee.
Vajpayee, 93, breathed his last today at 5:05pm at the AIIMS in Delhi. He was admitted to the hospital on June 11, after he contracted infection in urinary tract and chest congestion.
Although he was hospitalised two months ago, the BJP patriarch's overall health had deteriorated in 2009 as he suffered a stroke followed by dementia.
