Guwahati, July 29: Popular singer for North-East - Zubeen Garg - landed in a fresh controversy after stated at a cultural event that Brahmins should be killed. The Assam police lodged several cases for his statement in which the singer allegedly instigated hatred between different groups and castes in the region.

According to a report, the renowned singer sparked controversy during an event held at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) auditorium on Friday night. In that event, he had said, as quoted by Hindustan Times, "I am Brahmin, but I have snapped my 'lagun' (a sacred thread worn by Brahmins) in the movie. I had removed the thread earlier, and still, don’t wear it. These Brahmins should be killed." 'Miyah' Poetry Row: 9 Out of 10 Named in FIR For Depicting Assamese as 'Xenophobic' Yet to be Identified, Says Police

Following the comment, police registered several cases against Garg under various sections of IPC. Briefing more, officer-in-charge of Bhangagarh police station, Khargeswar Rabha, said in Guwahati, "We have lodged a case against Garg on Sunday under several sections of IPC for instigating hatred between different groups and castes with his comments."

It is to be known that the popular singer also made disparaging comments about the Hindi language saying that it is spoken by ordinary people like rickshaw pullers.

With things blowing out of proportion, Garg said on Sunday that he meant something else, while the opposite of it is being propagated. He said, "Actually, the meaning of my comment was something else. But since I said it in a different manner in jest, people understood it wrongly. I won’t say anything today, will give a clarification later."

Earlier in January, Garg had sparked a controversy by allegedly insulting the Bharat Ratna award on Republic Day. That time too, FIR stated that Garg used ‘unparliamentary’ language and defamed India’s highest civilian honour.
