Guwahati, July 7: A science teacher and four of his family members were caught performing "naked prayers" and attempting to sacrifice a 3-year-old child. The rare practice, referred to as "Noro Boli" in parts of Assam, was reported from Udalguri in Mangaldoi district on Saturday.

The accused family, on spotting the police, attempted to flee with the child but were apprehended. An inquiry into the case revealed that the 3-year-old belonged to one of their relatives. They were sacrificing him on directions of a self-styled godman.

Penal action is likely to be taken against the family and the godman for attempting to perform a human sacrifice. A case has been registered by the Udalguri police, reportedly booking the accused under the Anti-Superstition and Black Magic Act, along with other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
