Guwahati, July 25: Several districts in Assam have been put on alert after Bhutan released excess water from its hydro power dam on Thursday. Reports inform that the release of water from the Kurichhu hydropower plant in Gyelpozhing, Bhutan may worsen the ongoing flood-like situations in Assam. According to a report by Hindustan Times, an alert has been sounded in Barpeta district urging people residing on the banks of the Beki and Pahumara rivers to move to higher and safer locations. Assam Floods: 75 Dead in Deluge So Far, 34 Lakh People Affected. 

On Tuesday, the Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC) of Bhutan  had announced that it would release excess water from the 55 metre tall dam. The DGPC runs the 60MW Kurichhu project in the eastern part of Bhutan.

The northestern state of Assam has been reeling under severe floods since the June. The death toll due to torrential rains and floods in the state jumped to 75 on Wednesday as floods continue to wreak havoc in various districts, Disaster Management Authority (DMA) said. It added saying that flood waters have inundated vast swathes of 20 of all 33 districts in the state, affecting 38.82 lakh people. Assam Floods: NDRF Rescue Operations Intensifies as Districts of Tripura, Meghalaya Get Affected by Deluge, More Than 26 Lakh Affected.

In the wake of the current situation in the state, a large scale flood relief operation by the Army troops is underway in flood-hit areas of lower Assam since 11 June after the torrential rain hit the region. The heavy downpour in the state has triggered deluge in all districts, paralysing normal life. According to reports, a total of 488 civilians were evacuated along with relief to over 450 civilians in the last week.  Last week, the divisional forest department had informed that over 50 animals, including five rhinos, died in Kaziranga National Park in Assam floods.
