Assam NRC: Supreme Court Extends Last Date of Filing Claims and Objections to December 31, 2018

The top Court has extended the deadline from December 15 to 31st December, 2018. The decision comes as a breather for nearly 40 lakh people who did not find their names in the draft citizens’ list.

New Delhi, December 12: The Supreme Court on Wednesday extended the last date of filing claims and objections on the inclusion of names in the draft National Register of Citizen (NRC) in Assam. The top Court has extended the deadline from December 15 to 31st December, 2018. The decision comes as a breather for nearly 40 lakh people who did not find their names in the draft citizens’ list.

Earlier on November 1, the Supreme Court had extended the deadline till December 15. Moreover, the top court had also permitted to produce five more documents to get their names registered in Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC). On July 30, the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was published with 2.9 crore names out of the total 3.29 crore applicants in Assam. Registrar General of India Sailesh informed that the names of 40.07 lakh applicants did not find a place in the historic document, touted to be a proof of Assamese identity. The NRC will include the names of all Indian citizens who have been residing in Assam before March 25, 1971. The draft had created massive protests in Assam with various groups and political parties holding protests against the exclusion of over 40 lakh people from the list.
