Assam NRC Row: Police Initiates Action Against Miscreants Spreading Misinformation Through Social Media

With the reports of misinformation about the ongoing National Register of Citizens (NRC) process being spread among the masses, Assam police on informed that they would initiate an investigation into the complaint. Also, action will be taken on complaints of collection of donations using social media.

Guwahati, August 15: With the reports of misinformation about the ongoing National Register of Citizens (NRC) process being spread among the masses, Assam police on Thursday informed that they would initiate an investigation into the complaint. Along with this, police informed that they would also look into the complaints of collection of donations using social media to help applicants file application against missing names.

According to the information, a complaint has been filed by an RTI activist Dulal Borah on Tuesday with the criminal investigation department (CID) of Assam police. In the complaint, three people have been named for seeking donations to be sent to two bank accounts to help NRC applicants. Informing about the latest development, additional director general of police - heading CID - LR Bishnoi stated, as quoted by the Hindustan Times, "We have received the complaint. Once it is processed, an officer will be assigned to investigate." Adding more, Bishnoi stated that the investigation would look into the allegation of misuse of social media in connection with the NRC process.

It is to be known that the controversial NRC was first prepared only for Assam in 1951 is being updated under the supervision of the Supreme Court to identify Indian citizens. The motive is to weed out illegal immigrants. However, the controversy began after first draft NRC released in July last year excluding 40 lakh of the 3.39 crore applicants who had sought inclusion in the list. The final NRC list is to be published on August 31.
