Guwahati, October 22: Out of the 40 lakh applicants whose name weren't included in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) draft in Assam, only about one lakh people have filed claims so far for their inclusion in the list. The NRC revision has rocked Assam since the publication of its final draft on July 30 this year. The list sent shockwaves across the state as names of 40,07,707 persons were excluded from the list.
The process of claims-and-objections commenced on September 25 and will continue till November 23. The forms will be available across 2,500 'seva kendras', where people can file their appeal in their respective areas, an NRC official said. Since September 25, only 1,02,000 people have submitted their claims so far, a report by Hindustan Times said. The NRC, that is touted as the proof of Assamese identity, includes the names of Indian citizens who have been residing in Assam before 25th March, 1971. The official further informed that people can file corrections to their names that are in the draft and also raise objections against suspected foreigners. On July 30, the much-anticipated second and final draft of the NRC was published with 2.9 crore names out of the total 3.29 crore applicants in Assam, Registrar General of India Sailesh had informed. Reports inform that the first draft of the NRC was published during the intervening night of December 31 and January 1 this year, containing 1.9 crore names.
