Guwahati, August 30: The National Register of Citizens (NRC), the exercise carried out in Assam to identify and cancel the citizenship of illegal immigrants, is nearing its completion. The final NRC list would be published tomorrow at 10 am. In the draft list published under the Supreme Court's observation last year, 40.07 lakh citizens had been declared illegal immigrants. Those excluded were provided an opportunity to file an application challenging their non-inclusion in the list. Those Excluded From Final List Won't be Declared Foreigner, Says MHA as Deadline Nears.
On June 26 this year, another list was published by the government, excluding another 1,02,462 persons from the NRC final list. As per the norms laid down, a person residing in Assam would be deemed an Indian citizen only if he/she proves to have arrived, or his ancestors had arrived, before March 25, 1971.
How to Check Online Whether Your Names Have Been Included in NRC List:
Visit the official portals - www.nrcassam.nic.in or www.assam.mygov.in. Click on the "Supplementary Inclusions/Exclusions Lists (Final NRC) status". In the window which appears, enter Application Reference Number (ARN) to check if your name has been added.
Notably, those whose names were included in the draft list last year and were not named in the supplementary list published in June this year, are not required to check.
Apart from checking online, citizens who were excluded from the NRC draft last year or were named in the supplementary list of exclusion in June this year, can also visit their respective NRC Seva Kendra/Office of Circle Officer/Officer of Deputy Commissioner. The person must produce his/her ARN before the concerned official, to know whether his name has been included in the register of citizenship.
