Assam NRC Coordinator Prateek Hajela to Be Transferred to Madhya Pradesh: Supreme Court
The Supreme Court on Friday transferred Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC) coordinator Prateek Hajela to Madhya Pradesh on deputation. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, however, did not disclose the reason, why they are transferring Hajela. The apex court has also asked the government to notify his transfer within seven days.
New Delhi, October 18: The Supreme Court on Friday transferred Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC) coordinator Prateek Hajela to Madhya Pradesh on deputation. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, however, did not disclose the reason, why they are transferring Hajela. During the hearing, when Attorney General KK Venugopal asked CJI Ranjan Gogoi about a reason for the transfer, to which Chief Justice responded, "is there a transfer without a reason?" NRC Final List 2019 Published, Over 19 Lakh Excluded From National Register of Citizens of Assam.
Hajela had submitted a confidential report to the top court in which he is believed to have saught transfer from Assam. Last month, he was booked twice for alleged discrepancies in the NRC final list. An indigenous organisation claimed that “even when people had correct documents NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela intentionally excluded the names of Goriya, Moriya and many indigenous sons of the soil”.
Prateek Hajela, who hails from Madhya Pradesh, is a 1995 batch IAS officer of Assam-Meghalaya cadre. He was tasked for supervising the National Register of Citizens (NRC) updation in Assam. The final list of NRC was published on August 31, 2019, from which around 19 lakh people were excluded.
