Dispur, October 22: A retired teacher-turned-lawyer has allegedly committed suicide after his name was not included in the controversial National Register of Citizens (NRC) draft. This incident took place in Assam's Mangaldoi district on Sunday. The deceased was identified as 74-year-old Nirod Kumar Das. This comes after the government released the draft NRC which excluded almost 40 lakh people, earlier this year.

Das, who used to practice law after his retirement, was found hanging in his room by family members on Sunday morning. Das was serving as a teacher for 34 years before turning into an advocate. In his suicide note he claimed the reason for taking this drastic step to "escape the humiliation of being marked as a foreigner after the NRC process," his family members said. Excluding him, all his family members name were included in the list. His family and relatives have refused to hand over his body for postmortem citing the demand for action against government's NRC for marking him as 'foreigner'. What is the National Register of Citizens (NRC)?

NRC is a register containing the genuine Indians who are living in Assam. The first NRC draft was prepared in 1951. The updated NRC list was released on July 30, 2018. The new list is prepared to include descendants of people appeared in NRC, 1951 or in any government documents till March 24, 1971. The purpose of NRC is to identify the illegal immigrants in the state.
