Assam Government To Roll Out PRANAM Act Making Mandatory For State Government Employees To Take Care of Dependent Parents
The Assam government will make it mandatory for state government employees to look after their aged parents and physically challenged siblings who do not have any source of income by rolling out a law from October 2.
Dispur, July 27: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)- led government in Assam will be introducing a law from October 2 that will make it mandatory for state government employees to look after their aged parents and physically-challenged siblings who do not have any source of income. Assam Employees Parents Responsibility and Norms for Accountability and Monitoring (PRANAM) Bill, 2017 was passed by the government last year.
According to a report published in The Economic Times, the state cabinet has approved the rules of the PRANAM act. "Dependent parents not having any source of income can get up to 10 percent of the salary of the employee. If there are other physically challenged siblings it can go up to 15 percent,” reported The Economic Times, quoting Assam minister for health and finance, Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Sarma said that the government might also consider bringign state government public sector units and corporations under this law. According to the report, the government has also decided to have an appellate authority, which can look after claims and grievances under the act.
Assam has approximately four lakh employees. Earlier, Sarma while presenting the bill, said that the law would ensure that no aged and dependent parents of the state government employees are forced to live in old-age homes.
