Guwahati, August 3: The flood situation has worsened in Assam, close to one lakh people have been affected in the second wave of floods. Till now a total of 41 people died in the state because of floods following heavy rains since June last. Severe water-logging has also been reported in Jorabat which is situated on Assam- Meghalaya border due to heavy rainfall in the region.

According to a report published in The Times of India, more than 24,000 people have taken shelter in relief camps in the worst-hit Golaghat district in upper Assam neighbouring Nagaland. A total of 99 relief camps have been set at different regions in the district.

As per the report, out of the total people affected, more than 67,000 people have been affected in Golahat district alone mainly because of the release of water from NEEPCO’s Doyang hydel project in Wokha district of Nagaland. A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) has filed a case against NEEPCO at Golahat police station.

Saikia alleged that NEEPCO had released water from one of its plant at upstream areas of Dhansiri River in Nagaland. The BJP MLA also demanded compensation from NEEPCO including reconstruction of damaged infrastructure. Last year, during the floods in Assam, Assam Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), had run 954 relief camps providing shelter to a total of 4,51,846 people affected by the floods.
