Guwahati, July 27: Flood situation in Assam continued to remain grim as the death toll jumped to 81 on Saturday. The deluge in the northeastern state has paralysed normal life, affecting around 27.15 lakh people in 2,078 villages of 17 districts. However, in a major respite from the torrential rains, the water levels in several affected districts receded on Saturday. Assam Floods: 28 Dead As Heavy Rainfall Wreaks Havoc in 29 Districts, Over 57 Lakh People Affected.

As Bhutan released its excess water from Kuricchu hydropower plant reservoir, the flood situation in 2,753 villages in Assam worsened, affecting seven western districts, the Disaster Management Authority informed. The villages are located in the districts of Dhemaji, Darrang, Baksa, Barpeta, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat and Cachar.

The floods in the state were triggered after several rivers breached and were overflowing, causing widespread loss to lives and property in the state. According to reports, the water level of Brahmaputra was above the danger mark at Neamatighat (Jorhat) and Dhubri, while Jia Bharali is flowing above the danger level at Sonitpur. Meanwhil in Kamrup, the Puthimari river is flowing above the danger level while Manas and Beki rivers are also flowing above the danger mark in Barpeta.

On Saturday, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat contributed Rs 5 core to help flood-affected people of Assam. Expressing grief over the loss of life and property, Rawat said, "We are aware of the hardships being faced by people in Assam due to recent floods. We can feel their pain."
