Assam Floods: Brahmaputra River Flows Above Danger Mark, Roads Washed Away, School Building Collapses Due to Heavy Rains; Watch Video

The flood situation in Assam continued to worsen with new areas flooding on Sunday. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Saturday had informed that 25 districts of the state are under water and seven people have been killed so far in flood- and landslide-related incidents.

Guwahati, July 14: The flood situation in Assam continued to worsen on Sunday with new areas flooding due to incessant rains in the state. The torrential showers has forced the displacement of more than a million people from their homes in the past 72 hours. Following heavy rainfall, roads were washed away as water from Brahmaputra river entered Nagaon area in Morigaon district, triggering rapid flooding, landslides and mudslides in several places. The flood water also entered villages in Darrang district of Assam. The state authorities on Saturday had issued a warning saying that the situation could worsen in coming days. Assam Floods: Situation Becomes Grim in 17 Districts; 6 People Lose Lives, 4 Lakh Displaced.

On Saturday, the flood waters washed away a school building in Assam’s Morigaon district. According to a video released by ANI, the primary school in Tengaguri area in Morigaon district collapsed within a few seconds due to the rising water level in Brahmaputra. No casualties were reported.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Saturday said that 25 districts of the state are under water and seven people have been killed so far in flood- and landslide-related incidents. Reports inform that river Brahmaputra in Jorhat, Sonitpur, Kamrup, Goalpara and Dhubri districts was flowing above the danger level.

The flood has submerged 70 per cent of Kaziranga National Park (KNP), which is a World Heritage Site. In the wake of the grim situation in the state, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been pressed into service in the flood affected areas for search and rescue operations. Panic gripped the state as fear of Japanese encephalitis, a mosquito-borne viral infection, was also a scare among residents. More than 160 people have been killed since January by the infection.
