Assam Floods: 50 Dead, 5 Million Affected; 488 People Rescued by Indian Army so Far

At least 50 people lost their lives in Assam due to flash floods. Nearly 25 districts of the state are submerged under water. According to reports, close to five lakh people have been affected due to the calamity. Indian Army along with NDRF is carrying out large scale Flood Relief Operation in worst affected areas

Guwahati, July 19:  At least 50 people lost their lives in Assam due to flash floods. Nearly 25 districts of the state are submerged under water. According to reports, close to 5 million people have been affected because of the calamity. Indian Army along with National Disaster Response Force is carrying out large scale Flood Relief Operation in worst affected areas of Lower Assam since June 11. Earlier in the day, a delegation of MPs from Assam met Prime Minister Narendra. The PM assured the delegation of providing all central assistance to the flood-hit state. MP from Mangaldoi Dilip Saikia told PTI, “The Prime Minister gave us a patient hearing and assured that all central assistance will be given to the state government to provide succour to the distress people.”

PM Modi also tweeted about the meeting. He wrote, “A delegation of MPs from Assam, including Union Minister Shri Rameswar Teli met PM @narendramodi. On Tuesday, the Centre released Rs 251.55 crore as assistance for Assam. According to reports, 1080 relief camps have been set in the state. Apart from this, 689 relief distribution centres for providing essential items like food, potable water, baby food and mosquito repellents are also there. Meanwhile, the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) and the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary continued to remain under waters of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries which are flowing above the danger mark in various areas of the state.
