Guwahati, October 15: Police apprehended 31 Bangladeshi nationals in Guwahati on Monday while they were planning to go back to Bangladesh via Agartala. According to reports, they were held from Guwahati railway station platform No. 1. These people had been working in Bengaluru for the past three years. Last month, while addressing a rally in Rajasthan, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called Bangladeshi immigrants “termites”. Shah further said that each of them would be struck off the electoral roll. Referring to the draft National Register of Citizens recently published in Assam, he said that the BJP government had prima facie identified nearly 40 lakh illegal immigrants.

Meanwhile, Gowher Rizvi, Special Advisor to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on October 5 claimed that India had never raised the issue of illegal Bangladeshi migrants staying on its soil with his government. Rizvi further asked the Indian government to prove that the ‘illegal immigrants’ of Northeast India are indeed Bangladeshis. Meanwhile, on October 13, three illegal immigrants of Bangladesh were arrested from Agra. A joint operation was carried out by local intelligence unit and Sikandara police of Agra district. The three immigrants were identified as Saeedullah Ghazi (42), a native of Baigasa village of Khulna, his 40-year-old wife Ratna and his 22-year-old son Samim. These people were living in India from the last 15 years.
