Ashes of Atal Bihari Vajpayee to Be Taken by Road From Delhi to Prem Ashram, Har-Ki-Pauri in Haridwar
The ashes are being taken from Delhi's Smriti Sthal where his daughter Namita and granddaughter Niharika arrived on Sunday morning to collect the ashes.
Dehradun, August 19: Three urns carrying ashes of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee will be taken by road to Prem Ashram on Sunday followed by Har-ki-Pauri in Uttarakhand's Haridwar. The ashes are being taken from Delhi's Smriti Sthal where his daughter Namita and granddaughter Niharika arrived on Sunday morning to collect the ashes.
Thousands of mourners poured into the streets in New Delhi on Friday as Vajpayee's cortege made its way from his home to the BJP headquarters on Deendayal Upadhyay Marg and then to the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal, where he was cremated. The tricolour draping Vajpayee was folded and handed over to his granddaughter Niharika.
Vajpayee's foster-daughter Namita lit the funeral pyre amidst the chanting of Vedic hymns and firing of a 21-gun salute by soldiers. Vajpayee, who passed away at AIIMS on Thursday at age 93, was cremated with full military honours at Rashtriya Smriti Sthal, where people turned out in tens of thousands to pay their final tributes.
Political leaders cutting across party lines and foreign dignitaries joined the rest of the nation in bidding adieu to the departed leader at the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal. Among them were President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP Leader L K Advani among others.
