New Delhi, November 20: A man attacked Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal with chilly powder inside the Delhi Secretariat on Tuesday. The attack on Arvind Kejriwal was caught on a CCTV camera. The attacker, identified as Anil Kumar Sharma, was caught by Delhi police personnel. The video of the incident shows Sharma throwing chilli powder at Kejriwal.
Narrating the chain of events, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj said the attacker was waiting outside the Chief Minister's office. When Kejriwal stepped out, he flung chilli powder at Kejriwal, he said. Kejriwal's spectacles got damaged during a scuffle that broke out following the attack. The AAP called it a breach of security of the Chief Minister. Arvind Kejriwal Discharged in Criminal Defamation Case Filed by Subhash Chandra.
Notably, a person needs to go through a two-level security check to reach the Chief Minister's office. According to a PTI report, officials said after throwing red pepper powder on Kejriwal, Sharma threatened to shoot him after he comes out of jail. The attacker brought the chilli powder to the secretariat in packets of ‘khaini’, or chewing tobacco, they said. While Bhardwaj blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the attack, leader of the saffron party’s Delhi unit Manoj Tiwari condemned it and called for a “high-level” probe. “The BJP is behind the attack and the accused are being aided by the Modi government,” Bhardwaj alleged. Tiwari also said such incidents “cannot be tolerated or justified by anybody”.
"The incident took place at around 2.25 pm on the 3rd floor of Delhi Secretariat. When Delhi CM was coming out of his chamber, one person later identified as Anil Kumar Sharma tried to hand over his complaint to CM, who in turn passed it on to a staff member. Meanwhile, A Sharma bowed down to touch CM's feet. CM's security tried to remove him and CM's spectacles fell down. Security personnel removed Sharma aside and found him carrying a pouch in his hand, which got torn and was apparently containing chilly powder. He has been detained," Delhi police said in a statement.
