Yupia, September 25: A special POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) court at Yupia in Arunachal Pradesh has found three staff members of a government residential school guilty of sexually assaulting 21 minor students over several years. The convicted individuals include hostel warden Yumken Bagra, former headmaster Singtung Yorpen, and Hindi teacher Marbom Ngomdir. Special judge Jaweplu Chai delivered the verdict on Tuesday.
Hindustan Times reported that the main accused, Bagra, was convicted under Section 328 of the IPC (administering poison/harmful substance with the intention of committing an offence) and sections 6, 10, and 12 of the POCSO Act (aggravated penetrative sexual assault, sexual harassment). Ngomdir was found guilty under Section 506 of the IPC (criminal intimidation) and sections 17 and 21 (1) of the POCSO Act for abetment of offence and failing to report an offence. Yorpen was convicted under sections 17 and 21 (2) of the POCSO Act for abetment of an offence and failing to report it. The sentencing, initially scheduled for Wednesday, has been postponed to Thursday. The prosecution and the victims’ lawyer, Oyam Bingepp, are seeking maximum punishment, including the death penalty for Bagra, life imprisonment for Ngomdir, and a 10-year sentence for Yorpen. The case came to light in November 2022 when a parent lodged a complaint alleging that Bagra had sexually assaulted his 12-year-old twin daughters. The investigation, led by a special investigation team (SIT), revealed that Bagra had sexually assaulted 21 minors, including six boys, aged between 6 and 14 years, from 2014 to 2022.
Bagra reportedly administered drugs to the students to make them drowsy before committing the assaults. The investigation also uncovered six suicide attempts by the victims and threats made by Bagra to silence them.
