Itanagar, February 23: One person was killed on Friday in a police firing in Itanagar when protesters seeking changes in the recommendations by a government-appointed panel for granting permanent residence certificate (PRC) to non-Arunachalees tried to enter the Civil Secretariat. After the incident, the situation became tense. To avoid any untoward incident, the Army was conducting flag marches between Naharlagun and Itanagar. Meanwhile, Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday appealed to the people of Arunachal Pradesh to remain calm and maintain peace in the wake of ongoing protests. He also spoke to Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who briefed him about the prevailing situation in the border state. According to Arunachal Pradesh Home minister Kumar Waii, the situation is under control, and the state government has deployed all available forces. On Friday night, protesters had set ablaze 50 vehicles and damaged over 100 vehicles. They also resorted to stone pelting in which 35 people, including 24 police personnel, were injured. Offices of All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) and All Nyishi Students Union (ANSU) were also burnt as both the organisations supported the recommendation of the Joint High Power Committee (JHPC) constituted by the state government on May 1, 2018, to study the issue. The Joint High Power Committee, after holding discussions with the stakeholders, has recommended granting PRC to six communities, who are not natives of Arunachal Pradesh but has been living in Namsai and Changlang districts for decades. The six communities are Deoris, Sonowal Kacharis, Morans, Adivasis, Mishings and Gorkhas. Most of these communities are recognised as Scheduled Tribes in neighbouring Assam.
