Chandigarh, August 10: Manohar Lal Khattar, Chief Minister of Haryana and senior BJP leader, on Saturday sparked a controversy over the removal of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. In his address, Khattar said Haryana, which was termed as a state that kills a girl child, has 933 girls against 1000 boys now, as compared to 850:1000 ratio earlier. According to reports, Khattar, who was speaking on the success of Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao campaign at Maharishi Bhagirath Jayanti Samaroh in Fatehabad, said in a jovial way that people now are saying earlier bahus used to come from Bihar, but now the road to Kashmir is also open. "Our minister O P Dhankhar used to say that he will bring 'bahu' (daughter in law) from Bihar. Nowadays people are saying that path to Kashmir has been cleared", Khattar said at the event. Khattar is no stranger to making controversial remarks. In 2018, he was in trouble after he got into a controversy by making objectionable remarks over rape incidents. A similar incident was reported from Uttar Pradesh earlier this month where a BJP MLA from Muzaffarnagar district. The MLA said that party workers were excited over the scrapping of Article 370 as it would now enable them to marry 'gori' (fair) Kashmiri girls.
On August 5, the government abolished the provision of Article 370 of the Constitution that granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. With the new law in place, Jammu and Kashmir now stands bifurcated into two Union territories — J&K with a legislative assembly and Ladakh without one.
