New Delhi, August 5: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday announced in the Rajya Sabha to scrap article 370 which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Presidential order has also been released. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation on August 7 on the current situation in Kashmir. Besides, the state will be bifurcated into two Union Territories – Jammu and Kashmir with a Legislative Assembly and Ladakh with no Legislative Assembly. The opposition seemed to be divided on the government’s move. Some opposition parties including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP, the Telugu Desam Party (TRS) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) backed the Centre’s decision. However, the Janata Dal-United (JDU) who is part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has opposed the move. The ruling BJP had made promised to scrap Article 370 during the Lok Sabha Elections 2019. On Sunday night former Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti have been placed under house arrest. Internet services have been suspended across the Valley. Last week, around 40,000 troops were reported moved to the Valley and the Amarnath Yatra was suspended immediately.
