Kohima, August 6: A day after the Narendra Modi government scrapped special status of Jammu and Kashmir, newly-appointed governor of Nagaland RN Ravi assured that there is no plan to scrap Article 371 A of the constitution which gives similar provision to the northeastern state. Ravi in a statement to people of Nagaland said, “I would like to categorically assure you all that you don't have to worry at all. Art 371A is a solemn commitment to the People of Nagaland. It is a sacred commitment.” Jammu and Kashmir Bifurcated, Article 370 Repealed: 'A New Dawn, Better Tomorrow Awaits,' Tweets PM Narendra Modi.

Ravi was former deputy national security advisor and was the Centre’s interlocutor for the Naga peace process. He took oath as Nagaland Governor on August 1. Currently, negotiations are going on between the Centre and the insurgent groups to resolve the decades-old Naga political problem. A framework agreement was signed on August 3, 2015, between Government of India with National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah faction) after over 80 rounds of negotiations spanning 18 years. Jammu And Kashmir Loses Special Status Under Article 370, Becomes Union Territory Along With Ladakh.

Article 371A states that no act of Parliament -- with respect to religious or social practices of the Nagas, their customary law and procedure, administration of civil and criminal justice involving decisions according to Naga customary law, ownership and transfer of land and its resources -- shall apply to the state unless the Assembly decides by a resolution. After the Modi government abolished the provision giving special status to Jammu and Kashmir, there are apprehensions in Nagaland that the government may scrap Article 371 A.
