Lucknow, December 26: The Uttar Pradesh Police has adopted a statewide campaign to release posters carrying images of suspected violent protesters who damaged public property during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) stir. The posters, released from Mau in Purvanchal to Bijnor in western UP, also assure anonymity and cash reward to those who provide credible information leading to the arrest of suspects.
The police in Mau has released a total of 110 photos of suspects involved in violence. A total of 21 people have been arrested for violence in the district. In Varanasi, the police has released photos of 73 suspects, followed by 48 in Kanpur. In Firozabad, a total of 80 photos of suspects have been released by the UP Police. The accused were allegedly involved in the violence which erupted at Nalband locality on last Friday. In Bijnor, where 146 have already been arrested for allegedly resorting to arson, the police is offering Rs 25,000 cash reward to informants.
Across Uttar Pradesh, the posters are being accompanied with a footnote in which the police department has promised anonymity to those giving information about the whereabouts of the suspects. A cash reward has also been promised in lieu of passing on credible leads to the cops.
In Gorakhpur, the police department has pasted posters outside deserted homes of 33 suspects who were allegedly involved in the violence. A separate list of 69 other suspects, with their photos, has been released by the police department.
The anti-CAA stir in Uttar Pradesh has claimed 17 lives -- all of them Muslims -- with allegations of "indiscriminate firing" being levelled against the state police. So far, the police has admitted to firing in self-defence only on two occasions in Kanpur and Bijnor. In other fatal cases, the department has pinned the blame on criminal elements who had joined the protests against the citizenship law.
