Lucknow, December 25: The Uttar Pradesh government has sent notices to 28 people in Rampur, seeking recovery for the damage caused in the violence during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act last week. The government has sought recovery of Rs 14.86 lakh for the damage caused to public property during the violent protest, NDTV reported. The development comes days after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath allegedly vowed to take "revenge" from those involved in violence. Earlier, the state government sealed more than 67 shops of alleged "rioters" in Muzaffarnagar. Rampur and Muzaffarnagar were among districts where violence broke out during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act last week. Chief Minister Adityanath had promised to recover the losses from those involved in violence by imposing fines or attaching their properties. "There has been violence and public and private property has been destroyed in several districts in the state and we will deal with it strictly. All properties of those involved in damaging public assets will be seized and auctioned to compensate for the losses," Adityanath had said. As many as 15 districts witnessed violence during anti-CAA protests. Several bikes and cars were torched and public property was vandalised.
Violence mainly broke out when police stopped people from taking out processions against the CAA. Several parts of the state are still under prohibitory orders and internet remains suspended in some places. So far 879 people have been arrested and the police have filed 131 cases. While six people were killed in violence that broke out on December 20, nine deaths were reported the next day.
Four deaths were reported from Meerut district, while the boy lost his life in a stampede in Varanasi when a violent mob was being chased by police personnel. Two persons were killed in Bijnor and one each in Lucknow and Rampur.
