Lucknow, January 2: The Uttar Pradesh government has lauded itself for "shocking" anti-CAA protesters into silence with a stern crackdown, but reports emerging from the ground have also levelled excesses allegation against the police department. The person, identified as Banne Khan of Baze Wali Gali in Firozabad city, had died six years ago, reported The Telegraph. On Monday, the police handed his son Mohammad Sarfaraz Khan the notice which states that Banne has to appear before a local magistrate and seek bail within the next seven-days, failing to which the police would arrest him.

The notice reads that Banne has been booked under Sections 107 and 116 Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). This makes it mandatory for him to seek pre-emptive bail from a local court. The deceased person is not alone, the list of 200 suspected miscreants also includes 93-year-old Fasahat Meer Khan of Kotla Mohalla and 90-year-old Sufi Ansar Hussain -- both residents of Faizabad district.

Khan, who has been left bedridden, was approached by the UP Police personnel on Wednesday. After they saw his condition, one of the cops dialled his seniors and said, "The person is too old", narrate one of Khan's family members to reporters.

Khan's son, while speaking to News18, said the police department's action has left them hurt. "My father is a well-known social worker and has even met former President APJ Abdul Kalam at Rashtrapati Bhavan. I fail to understand why police is issuing notice to him," he said.

The anti-CAA stir in Uttar Pradesh left 19 persons dead, including those killed in alleged police firing. At least 61 have been left injured, over 1,100 arrested and around 5,500 taken into custody for their alleged role in the violence. The administration is using CCTV footages to identify the alleged miscreants, who are not only being booked for penal action but also sent notices, directing them to pay compensation for the damage to public property allegedly caused by them.
