New Delhi, December 24: Authorities imposed Section 144 of CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure) near Mandi House in Central Delhi ahead of a planned protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act. Section 144 prohibits the assembly of five or more people, holding meetings or carrying weapons. Anti-CAA protesters are gathering in Mandi House area and have planned to march towards Jantar Mantar. Delhi police have not granted permission for the protest march. Why Citizenship Amendment Act+NRC Raise Fear And Concerns: A Multi-Dimensional Take.

Delhi has been witnessing a series of protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and yet-to-be-implemented the National Register of Citizens or NRC. On December 14, a massive protest took place at the Jamia Millia Islamia pulling the national capital into the nation-wide frenzy over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. During the protest, miscreants burned buses after which police resorted to lathi-charge and fired tear gas. CAB Passage Jolts Northeast: Why Assam and Neighbouring States Are Up in Protest Against Citizenship Amendment Bill.

Jamia students had alleged that cops entered their hostel rooms and library and assaulted them. A week later, another protest was held at the varsity which remained peaceful. Hundreds of students and residents gathered outside the Jamia campus and carried out a march carrying the national flag, seeking an immediate rollback of the CAA. Similar protests were held in Daryaganj and Jamia Nagar and at iconic Jama Masjid where thousands gathered to express their disapproval for the CAA.

The Citizenship Amendment Act give Indian citizenship to all immigrants fleeing religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan - but not if they are Muslim. Many see the CAA through the prism of nationwide National Register of Citizens. While non-Muslims left out of the proposed nationwide NRC may be able to get citizenship under the CAA, Muslims who could not make the list may be deported or sent to detention centres.
