In Uttar Pradesh, violence was reported in several parts of the state, including the capital Lucknow. Incidents of arson were reported in minority dominated pockets of Khadra and Hazratganj -- where the demonstrators allegedly resorted to stone pelting and vandalism.

To curtail the unrest, the police resorted to lathicharge in several parts of the state. The administration had already issued prohibitory orders by imposing Section 144 of CrPC -- which prevents the assembly of five or more people at public places.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed anguish against the incidents of violence which were reported during the protest. He has ordered the police department to identify the miscreants and take strict action against them. "Their properties will be seized to compensate for the damages inflicted on public properties," he said.
