Anti-CAA Protests Turn Violent in East Delhi, Police Resort to Lathicharge, Fire Teargas Shells
The violent protests in East Delhi comes two days after a clash between demonstrators and police personnel was reported in South Delhi. The clashes had erupted after a section of miscreants among the Jamia Millia Islamia protesters set four DTC buses on fire. In retaliation, the police barged into the Jamia campus and reportedly assaulted students and staff members.
New Delhi, December 17: The protests called against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in East Delhi turned violent, with a section of demonstrators vandalising vehicles and pelting stones against security forces. The Delhi Police personnel deployed to bring the situation under control resorted to lathicharge. Teargas shells were also fired by the police to disperse the infuriated mob. The clashes between protesters and police personnel was reported in Seelampur region. Preliminary reports claimed that the anti-CAA protesters had begun their march at around 12 pm. The violence broke out shortly thereafter after a section of the demonstrators reportedly resorting to stone pelting.
At least two policemen, along with a few protesters, have been reported to be injured in the clashes. To prevent the further mobilisation of protesters, the administration has imposed traffic blockades and closed down the four metro stations in East Delhi.
"Entry and exit gates of Welcome, Jaffarabad and Maujpur-Babarpur, Seelampur and Gokulpuri are closed. Trains won't be halting at these stations," said the statement issued by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

"Traffic movement has been closed on 66 feet road from Seelampur to Jafrabad (both carriageways) due to demonstration," said the statement issued by the Delhi Traffic Police. According to NDTV, the protesters have burned down the police station in Seelampur.
