The Muslim community in western Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr on Friday handed over Rs 6 lakh to Uttar Pradesh government as a compensation for damages that occurred during protests against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Bulandshahr, December 27: The Muslim community in western Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr on Friday handed over Rs six lakh to Uttar Pradesh government as a compensation for damages that occurred during protests against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Videos and pictures of prominent members of the Muslim community giving a cheque to the district authorities surfaced in social media. According to a report published in NDTV, UP clerics from neighbouring Muzaffarnagar district also apologised to the district administration for the violence which erupted during protests. Meanwhile, a total of 327 FIRs have been registered across Uttar Pradesh in connection with the violence during anti-CAA protests. In addition to this, at least 1,113 people were arrested, and 5,558 people were taken into preventive custody.

As per reports, 21 people, including a 20-year-old IAS aspirant, lost there lives in the violence during the protests. However, the state police claimed that only 19 people died in the protests. The state police also arrested 124 people for posting inciting content on social media. The UP police took action on 19,409 social media posts. On Thursday, Director General of Police (DGP), OP Singh ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) inquiry in the incidences of violence that broke out during anti-CAA protests in the state. Protests erupted in several parts of the country last week, including Uttar Pradesh, over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. The act grants citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists, and Christians fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.
