Anti-CAA Protests: Fresh Clash Between Protesters And Police in Rampur, Mobile Internet Suspended

A day after the violence over the Citizenship Amendment Act in several parts of Uttar Pradesh, a fresh clash between protesters and police personnel was reported in Rampur on Saturday.

Lucknow, December 21: A day after the violence over the Citizenship Amendment Act in several parts of Uttar Pradesh, a fresh clash between protesters and police personnel was reported in Rampur on Saturday. According to a report, agitators broke police barricades near Idgah area in Rampur and allegedly hurled stones at cops who fired tear gas and used batons to disperse the crowd. Mobile and broadband internet services were suspended following the clash.

As many as 11 people were killed during violence that broke during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in Kanpur, Firozabad's Lalganj area, Bijnor's Naya Bazar area, Bulandshahr, Hapur, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Varanasi, Bahraich and Gorakhpur on Friday afternoon. Protesters allegedly pelted stones at the police, set motorbikes and cars on fire during demonstrations against the Citizenship Amendment Act. In return, the police fired tear gas shells and lathi-charged protesters.

Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) OP Singh reiterated that the police did not fire at anti-CAA protesters even as deceased and injured had gunshot injuries. There had been reports of firing on police personnel deployed to maintain law and order. Six policemen received bullet injuries in various parts of the state and condition of one officer was critical, officials told news agency PTI. As many as 19 FIRs have been registered in connection with the violence. Anti-CAA Protests: Journalist Detained, Humiliated With Communal Slurs by Lucknow Police, Later Released With Apology.

“In preventive action following today’s incidents, police have taken a total of 667 persons into custody,” UP police said in a statement. Internet services have been shut down in 15 districts. Schools and colleges remain shut on Saturday.
