Anti-CAA Protests: Actor Siddharth, MP Thirumavalavan Among 600 Protesters Booked by Tamil Nadu Police

Tamil Nadu police filed a case against 600 protesters for demonstrating against Citizenship Amendment Act at Valluvar Kottam in Chennai on Thursday. Amongst the people who were booked include Actor Siddharth, musician TM Krishna, MP Thirumavalavan and MH Jawahirullah.

Chennai, December 20: Tamil Nadu police filed a case against 600 protesters for demonstrating against Citizenship Amendment Act at Valluvar Kottam in Chennai on Thursday. Amongst the people who were booked include Actor Siddharth, musician TM Krishna, MP from Chidambaram constituency Thirumavalavan and MH Jawahirullah. Ahead of the Anti-CAA protest, Chennai police revoked the permission. Over 70 people were also reportedly arrested by police on Thursday. As per a report published in The Times of India, Sunnath Jama-ath and other Muslim outfits, including TNTJ and TMMK were planning to hold one-day hartal at Karumbukkadai, Podanur, Kuniyamuthur, Ukkadam and Mettupalayam on Friday. Meanwhile, around 2,500 police personnel will be deployed to stop the protests in the district.

In Uttar Pradesh also, arrested 350 people in connection with Thursday's violent protests. One protester was also killed in the protests at Lucknow. Destruction of public property was also reported across the state. A total of 19 FIRs have also been registered in connection to the protests in Lucknow.

In the latest development, the Assam government restored mobile internet services across the state. Mobile internet services had been suspended since December 11 following mass protests against the CAA. The internet services were suspended initially for 24 hours in 10 districts of Assam. On December 16, the suspension was extended for another 24 hours in 10 districts including Lakhimpur, Tinsukia and Dhemaji.

The Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019 was passed in Parliament earlier this month. After the passage of the bill, widespread protests rocked the country which led to the snapping of internet services in various states including Assam, parts of Mangaluru, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.,
