Mumbai, August 28: The MHB Colony police recently detained a man named Dheeraj Prasad for mercilessly killing a stray dog with an iron rod at Shivaji Nagar in Borivali (west), which is a neighbourhood on the fringes of IC Colony.

According to IPC section 429 and section 11(1)(a) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, a local citizen named Payal Sharad Gund filed a police report accusing Prasad of animal cruelty.

Gund has also commended Sudhir Kudalkar, the senior police inspector of MHB Colony, on behalf of the community's animal lovers, for acting swiftly to bring the accused to justice. Animal Cruelty in UK: Indian-Origin Man Sentenced to Prison for Starving, Chaining Dog to Fridge After It Gives Birth to Seven Puppies.

In addition to being a companion to many residents, the slain dog's presence had been essential in securing the neighbourhood, and this occurrence, which occurred on August 24, illustrates a problem with animal cruelty and community security, a local animal lover told TOI. Locals assert that Prasad, the accused man, was drunk at the time of the incident. US Animal Cruelty Horror: Man Tortures, Brutally Murders Six Cats in Chicago; Some Kittens Killed in Microwave.

Senior PI Kudalkar, well-known in the animal welfare community for assisting activists and feeders in cases of animal cruelty, has stated that there has to be general knowledge of the laws protecting animals to deter those who dislike animals from injuring them. In order to pursue legal action in such situations of cruelty in any section of the city, Kudalkar has also established the 'PAL' (pure animal lovers) organisation, which comprises activists and attorneys.
