Vizianagarm, July 15: In a deeply disturbing incident that has shaken Ramabhadrapuram mandal in Vizianagaram district, a 40-year-old man under the influence of alcohol allegedly raped his six-month-old niece in the absence of her parents in her residence. The appalling crime came to light following the swift arrest of the accused, identified as Boyana Yerrakanna Dora, on Sunday morning, July 14. According to officials, the infant's mother had momentarily left her in the cradle to fetch essentials from a nearby store, during which time the accused seized the opportunity to commit the heinous act inside their home.
According to The New Indian Express report, the horrific incident unfolded on the morning of July 13, Saturday, when the infant's mother, along with her 10-year-old daughter, went to fetch groceries from a nearby store after bathing the infant and leaving her in the cradle. It was during this period that Dora, the infant's paternal uncle, reportedly in an intoxicated state, entered the house and sexually assaulted her, prompting her to cry relentlessly. Upon hearing the infant's cries, the sister of the victim rushed to the scene only to discover the infant bleeding from her private parts in their uncle's arm. Shocked by the scene in front of her, the victim's sister alerted her mother and other villagers. Upon being confronted, the man placed the infant back in her cradle and fled from the spot. Subsequently, the infant was quickly rushed to a government hospital in Badangi and later transferred to Vizinagaram, where medical examinations confirmed her stable condition despite the traumatic assault. As per a report by the Deccan Chronicle, following the mother's complaint, authorities swiftly acted, registering a case under the stringent provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Section 65 (2) (whoever commits rape on a woman under 12 years of age should be punished with rigorous imprisonment for a term not less than 20 years) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) while launching a search for the absconding accused, later arresting him from his residence the next morning.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice from various quarters, including Tribal Welfare Minister Gumadi Sandhya Rani, who vehemently condemned the crime and advocated for stringent punishment to deter such atrocities. The case remains under investigation as authorities continue to gather evidence and ensure legal proceedings.
