Andheri Bridge Collapse: Blame Game Begins, BMC Passes the Buck on Railways

Mumbai, July 3: The blame game over Andheri' Gokhale bridge collapse has begun as Vijay Khabale, Public Relations Officer, BMC, talking to news channel Times Now, said that the Western Railways is responsible for the bridge collapse and not the BMC as the part of the bridge that actually collapsed is with the Railways. Heavy rains since early morning in Mumbai brought down a part of Andheri's Foot-over-Bridge (FOB) called Gokhale Bridge, which connects Andheri East to West. The collapse affected the overhead wires too and trains on the western line have been affected. Rescue operations are underway at the spot. Even Shiv Sena Party MLA Ramesh Latke, who represents Andheri East Vidhan Sabha constituency of Mumbai said that the "bridge is under BMC administration but the portion that goes over the tracks belongs to the railways. The responsibility of maintaining that portion is with railway(sic)", said the MLA to CNN News 18.

Earlier, heavy rains lashed several parts of Mumbai overnight since Monday evening as some reports said over 90 mm of rainfall was recorded till 5.30 am on Tuesday in some areas. After a day's break, rains made a comeback on Monday and it has been raining incessantly across Mumbai since the evening of July 2.

While waterlogging and traffic jams were being reported from some areas like Jogeshwari on Monday evening, the impact remains to be seen on Tuesday morning as Mumbaikars step out for work and it continues to rain.
