New Delhi, January 23: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on Wednesday issued a show-cause notice to two students, including Ajay Singh, the grandson of BJP MLA Dalveer Singh, for organising a tiranga yatra - bike rally with national flag - without permission. The varsity has asked the students to issue a reply within 24 hours -- failing to which "strict action" will be taken against them.
AMU proctor Prof Mohsin Khan sent the show cause notice after the matter was brought to light by the academic staff which faced inconvenience during the teaching hours due to the bike rally. The proctor has mentioned in the notice that "anti-social elements" from outside were brought for the bike rally which vitiated the peaceful educational environment on the campus. Ajay Singh, who is pursuing LLM in the University, has protested against the administration for threatening action against him. The student alleged that he applied for permission before the proctor on January 19, but received no response to his application.
Singh, whose father is a leader of the ruling BJP, said he would register a complaint before the Human Resources Department (HRD) against the varsity if it acts against him for organising the "tiranga yatra".
He accused the University of adopting "inaction" when students voice their support in favour of Jammu & Kashmir separatists, when they tear papers in opposition to the general category reservation, but is acting in a case where "Bharat Mata ki Jai" slogan has been raised.
AMU PRO Omar Peerzada, however, justified the issuance of show cause notice, claiming that the accused students have prima facie violated the code of conduct.
"We organise a week-long programme to celebrate Republic Day, I would like to request all students to participate in that. University belongs to all the students; if you do it separately then you won’t be able to accommodate all," he said.
