Amritsar Train Accident: Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh Orders Majesterial Enquiry Into Incident
A day after the tragic train incident which took place in Amritsar, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh today visited the injured at various hospitals in the city.
Amritsar, October 20: A day after the tragic train incident which took place in Amritsar, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh today visited the injured at various hospitals in the city. The CM has ordered the immediate release of Rs. 3 Crore to DC Amritsar for payment of ex-gratia to the families of the deceased. A magisterial inquiry has also been ordered in the incident under the police commissioner who will submit a report in 4 weeks.
Captain Singh further stated, “When a tragedy occurs the entire administration gets involved. We have come here as soon as we could come. Today, the entire cabinet of Punjab is here.” Meanwhile, the administration is trying to conduct post-mortem of the bodies as soon as possible. Around nine bodies are yet to be identified. Meanwhile, the Northern Railways claimed that gate no-27 is a manned level crossing gate and it was closed for road traffic for passing the DMU train which mowed down around 60 people who were gathered at the tracks during Ravan Dahan at Joda Phatak in the city. It further said that there is about 2.5-meter high brick wall between the railway track and the Ravan Effigy Dahan site.
However, the Dussehra committee which organised the event had written a letter to police seeking security arrangements for Dussehra celebrations at Dhobi Ghat, Golden Avenue in Amritsar. Due to the incident, the railways cancelled 37 trains and diverted 16 trains on Saturday. As per reports, 10 Mail Express trains and 27 passenger trains are cancelled, while 16 trains are diverted. In addition to this, 10 Mail Express trains and two passenger trains are short terminated and six Mail Express trains. Former MLA Navjot Kaur Sidhu was the chief guest of the event. As per reports, the train was travelling from Pathankot to Amritsar. Injured were rushed to nearby Civil Hospital. Some of them were also admitted to Guru Nanak Hospital.
