Amritsar, October 21: The Amritsar Police has launched a search operation to find the parents or kin of a 10-year-old baby, found at the tracks near Jaura Phatak -- the site where 61 Dussehra revelers were mowed down to death by a Jalandhar-bound DMU train on Friday.
The toddler is currently being treated at the Guru Nanak Hospital. Although his condition is reported to be stable, the child had sustained injuries on his forehead. The police have appealed people to call on 0183 2220205 if they have information related to baby's parents or relatives.
As many as 20 missing persons' complaint have been registered at the Dhobi Ghat police station in Amritsar, under whose jurisdiction the site of tragedy falls. The plaintiffs claim that neither their missing kin are being treated at the civil hospital or Guru Nanak hospital, nor have their bodies been located in the morgues. Meanwhile, the Indian Railways has ruled out an inquiry into the accident on Friday, claiming that the local administration and Dussehra event organisers were at fault. Issuing a clean chit to the driver, Railway Board Chairman Ashwani Lohani said he was given the green signal, with the the gates of a nearby intersected crossing being closed.
Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh has ordered a magisterial probe into the incident. The inquiry report would be tabled within 4 weeks, Amarinder Singh said, adding that accountability would be fixed and action would be taken against all those responsible.
The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the immediate kin of deceased, whereas, the Centre would be disbursing Rs 2.5 lakh to them.
