Mumbai, January 10: Even as the strike called by the employees of Brihamumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) buses continues, employees of Mumbai monorail have also threatened a stir. According to reports, around 250 employees of Mumbai Monorail have threatened to go on a strike stating that their December 2018 salaries have not yet been paid and that there is no clarity on it. BEST Bus Strike in Mumbai Enters Third Day, Central Railways Runs Extra Local Trains; Check Schedule.
The development comes just days after Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) overtook operations of Monorail from Larsen & Toubro in December. As per a DNA report, Monorail employees have written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis as well as the MMRDA, giving them an ultimatum to look into their demands.
"We are in touch with the employees, and we will resolve and address all their concerns. They should support us rather than writing of withdrawal of support considering now they have job security when compared with a private operator who was not paying them their salary on time," said an MMRDA employee as quoted by DNA.
The first phase of Monorail between Chembur and Wadala is operational and almost 15,000 passengers travel daily.
Meanwhile, lakhs of commuters in Mumbai continued to face the brunt of the indefinite strike called by BEST employees. The Central Railways has now rolled out extra trains to help travellers reach their destinations without much delay. The Central Railway CPRO stated that in view of BEST buses strike Mumbai Division will run extra sub-services. The commuters' woes may grow if Monorail employees also go on a trike simultaneous.
