Alwar Lynching: BJP Leader Says the More Popular PM Modi Becomes, the More Such Incidents Will Take Place in India
The BJP leader said the government condemns mob lynching but the incident that took place in Alwar on Friday night is not the first incident of lynching that has come to light.
New Delhi, July 21: A day after a 28-year-old man was beaten to death at Alwar in Rajasthan on suspicion of cow smuggling, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Saturday sparked a row by saying the more popular Prime Minister Narendra Modi becomes, the more such incidents will happen. The BJP leader said the government condemns mob lynching but the lynching incident in Alwar is not the first incident of lynching that has come to light.
He added saying what happened with Sikhs in 1984 was the biggest mob lynching of this nation's history. "We condemn mob lynching but this isn't a single incident. You have to trace this back in history. Why does this happen? Who should stop this? What happened with Sikhs in 1984 was the biggest mob lynching of this nation's history", Meghwal said.
"The more popular Modi ji becomes, the more such incidents will happen. In Bihar election it was 'Award Wapsi', UP election it was mob lynching. In 2019 elections it'll be something else. Modi ji ne yojnaein di aur uska asar dikh raha hai ye uska ek reaction ha", he added.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje took to Twitter and said that the incident is condemnable. "The incident of the alleged lynching of a person transporting bovines in Alwar district is condemnable. Strictest possible action shall be taken against the perpetrators", Raje tweeted.
The lynching on Friday comes just four days after the Supreme Court had asked the legislature to consider enacting a new penal provision to deal with mob violence and provide deterrent punishment to offenders.
To recall, a 28-year-old man was reportedly lynched in Rajasthan's Alwar on Friday night by villagers on suspicion of cow smuggling. Reports inform that the man was identified as Akbar Khan (28). People suspected that Khan was smuggling cows but the allegation is yet to be verified, Police said. The other man accompanying Khan managed to escape.
Soon after the incident, Khan was rushed to a government hospital in Ramgarh, where doctors declared him brought dead. According to a PTI report, the body has been kept at a mortuary and the postmortem is expected to be conducted after Khan's family reach the hospital.
