Update by ANI

The situation in Aligarh turned tense after students of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) came out in revolt against the alleged police brutalities pepretated on their Jamia Millia Islamia counterparts last night. Subsequently, the administration had snapped internet connection in the region to prevent the unrest from further fueling.

Apart from Aligarh, the protests have also spread to neighbouring Mau, where citizens, activists and students came out to protest against the "divisive" citizenship law. Demonstrators in the eastern UP city, while speaking to reporters, said they are forced to hit the streets as the law is aimed at turning the Indian Muslims "stateless".

The CAA, which was passed in the Parliament last week, proposes to naturalise non-Muslim refugees. Muslim groups see the legislation as a ploy to target Indian Muslims after conducting a pan-India National Register of Citizenship (NRC) exercise.
