Lucknow, December 29: Samajwadi Party leader and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party. He said that that he will no fill the form of National Population Register (NPR) and asked the centre to look problems hurting the economy. The Samajwadi Party leader made this statement while speaking at an event to welcome students’ union leaders. “The BJP won’t decide if we are Indians or not. We don’t want NPR. What we want are employment and livelihood. The experts are saying that the economy is in ICU. Mahatma Gandhi had shown the way in South Africa. He had burned some cards. Here, we will be the first who will not fill the NPR forms. I will not fill any form, now you decide if you would fill nor not,” Akhilesh Yadav said in Lucknow.

Recently, the Union cabinet approved Rs 3,941.36 crore from updating NPR and another Rs 8,500 crore for 2021 census. The government said that NPR would be linked with the upcoming Census. The centre also made it clear that NPR has no link with Nationa Register of Citizens.

However, the opposition has been claiming that NPR is a move towards a nationwide NRC- a proposed exercise that has led to massive protests across the country due to its possible link with new Citizenship Amendment Act.
