Air India Revokes Ban on Zam Zam Water From Two Flights, Allows Haj Pilgrims to Carry it Under Permissible Limit

New Delhi/Mumbai, July 9: A day after the facing a backlash on the notification for Haj pilgrims - barring Zam Zam water - the aviation firm clarified that passengers are allowed to carry Zamzam cans within their permissible baggage allowance. This new clarification comes amid protests from the Jeddah -Hyderabad - Mumbai and Jeddah - Cochin passengers who were restricted from carrying the Zam Zam water post-September 15.
Announcing the new clarification, Air India took to Twitter and wrote, "With reference to instructions regarding non-carriage of Zamzam cans, on AI966 and AI964, we wish to clarify that passengers are allowed to carry Zamzam cans within their permissible baggage allowance. Earlier, with the public aviation firm had notified that passengers of the Jeddah -Hyderabad - Mumbai and Jeddah - Cochin bound flights would not be allowed to carry Zam Zam water. In a letter, it had said, "Due to change of aircraft and limitation of seats, zam zam cans will not be allowed on our flights." Following this, many pilgrims reached to Congress MLA Amin Patel to intervene and he wrote a letter to the Union Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Puri to look into the matter.
In the letter to the Union Minister, Patel wrote, as reported by The Times of India, "Zam zam is sacred water and has religious significance. It is believed to be so blessed that it can cure illnesses. Hajis must be allowed to carry them. Hajis must be allowed to carry them." Referring to MOU signed between AI and Haj Committee, Haj Committee of India's CEO M A Khan had cliamed that AI was bound to give a can carrying five litre of zam zam to each pilgrim returning from Haj.
