Ahmedabad, August 26: A nine-month-old toddler, a native of Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh, underwent surgery at the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital after accidentally ingesting a small LED bulb. According to hospital authorities, the child had been playing with a toy mobile phone and had placed the 'antenna' of the phone, which included the LED bulb, into his mouth. Unbeknownst to his parents, the incident occurred, and they only became aware when he started experiencing breathing difficulties.

According to media reports, the child was subsequently brought to a nearby doctor, who, upon conducting an X-ray, identified an object lodged in his right lung. The nature of the foreign object necessitated surgical intervention for its removal. The child's father, Hasrat Ali, told about the incident to his friend in Ahmedabad, who then recommended seeking treatment for the child in that city. The doctors from the Paediatric Surgery Department started the process by conducting an X-ray, followed by an attempt to extract the object using a bronchoscope. Although the foreign object was visible within the trachea during the initial attempt, it couldn't be securely removed. The initial attempt was thwarted by considerable swelling and excessive bleeding. Subsequently, a second attempt was undertaken after a span of four days, which ultimately proved successful.

During the second attempt, the doctors successfully removed a foreign object struck in the child's lung, which turned out to be an LED bulb. Doctors speculated that while playing, the child might have inadvertently broken off the end of the light from the toy phone and subsequently placed it in his mouth. Maharashtra: Doctors Remove Lord Hanuman Locket From Child’s Throat He Swallowed Playing in Nanded (Watch Video).

In another incident, a four-year-old boy in Haryana’s Nuh district swallowed a whistle attached to a new pair of shoes he was given for Eid. His mother took him to Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences, where doctors successfully removed the whistle. The institute sees 80 to 100 cases yearly of children ingesting foreign objects that can block their airways and warns parents to monitor their children closely.
