Ahmedabad: Four-Storey Building in Odhav Area Collapses, 10 Residents Trapped
Notably, the building residents were served a notice by the civic body on Saturday to vacate their houses as the structure was found to be 'dangerous'.
Ahmedabad, Aug 26: A four-storey building in Ahmedabad's Odhav area collapsed on Sunday evening. At least 10 residents are trapped under the debris, confirmed fire department chief Rajeev Bhatt, adding that two others have been rescued by the fire brigade personnel.
At least four fire tenders are present at the site to expedite the rescue operation. The National Disaster Response Force personnel have also been rushed at the spot, confirmed Gujarat Home Minister Pradipsinh Jadeja.
Notably, the building residents were served a notice by the civic body on Saturday to vacate their houses as the structure was found to be dilapidated.
Mayor Bijal Patel, while speaking to reporters, said 29 of the 32 families had left their houses after being issued the warning. Three families, however, were firm on staying back despite being offered alternative accommodations.
A woman rescued from the collapse site said her family had been looking for a residence since yesterday, when the notice was serviced by the municipal corporation.
While the rescue operation is underway, the civic body is likely to draw flak for failing to completely vacate the building after finding it "dangerous" for accomodation.
