Agra, November 13: A monkey snatched an infant from her mother when she was breastfeeding and killed him. The incident took place in Kachhara Thok colony of Runkata area in Agra's outskirt late on Monday night. The deceased was identified as 12-day-old Arush. The same monkey later attacked a 14-year-old girl, leaving her seriously injuried.

According to the victim's father, Yogesh, his wife Neha was breastfeeding Arush when a monkey barged in their house as the door was open. The monkey grabbed Arush by his neck and fled. “Before Neha could understand anything, the monkey took away our son," Yogesh told a leading daily. Arush was the only son of the couple. Uttar Pradesh: Elderly Man Stoned to Death by Monkeys, Family Wants FIR Against Animals.

Locals chased the monkey who later left Arush on a neighbour's roof. "Arush was heavily bleeding and had no pulse. We took him to a nearby private hospital, where he was declared dead," the grieving father said. There were grave injuries on the toddler's skull and neck, a police officer said. "Neha is devastated," a neighbour said.

This is the second such incident in the last few months. Only a few days ago another child from the area was brutally attacked by monkeys. The victim is in ICU. A motorcycle rider died after hitting a road divider when simians struck him on the Mahatma Gandhi Road a month ago. Agra has been plagued by monkey menace for the past ten years.

The monkey population is estimated to have crossed 50,000. Even rural areas bordering Agra are severely affected by the problem. Last month, an elderly man was stoned to death by monkeys in Bhagpat.
