Agra, October 4: In a peculiar case from Agra, Uttar Pradesh, a couple's marriage faced severe strain due to the husband's addiction to gutkha, leading to a police intervention. The husband accused his wife of stealing gutkha from his pockets, leading to frequent arguments that resulted in him sending her back to her parental home.

According to a report from India Today, the couple, married in 2022, found their relationship deteriorating over the husband's persistent gutkha habit. Initially, the couple appeared to manage well, but the husband’s habit of keeping a stock of gutkha at home led to complications when the wife began casually consuming it. The husband claimed that his wife started stealing gutkha from his pockets, igniting frequent arguments that culminated in him sending her back to her parental home. Following this, the wife filed a police complaint against her husband. Both were directed to a family counselling centre, where they shared their grievances. The husband expressed frustration over his wife's habit of stealing gutkha, while the wife defended her actions, stating that she only took small amounts.

Counsellor Dr Satish Khirwar facilitated the session, advising both partners to quit gutkha altogether. During the counselling, the couple promised to refrain from consuming gutkha in the future. Dr Khirwar further emphasised that addictions to tobacco and alcohol often lead to significant family disputes, underscoring the importance of addressing such habits for the sake of family harmony.
