Afzal Guru's Son Ghalib Gets Aadhaar Card, Says 'I am Proud of It'
Ghalib is currently preparing for the medical entrance exam NEET - scheduled on May 5.
Srinagar, March 5: Ghalib, the son of hanged Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, has obtained an Aadhaar card. 18-year-old Ghalib, who is proud of owning an Aadhaar card, wishes to get an Indian passport next. The teenager stays with maternal grandfather Ghulam Mohammad and mother Tabassum and wants to pursue a degree in medical science. Ghalib is currently preparing for the medical entrance exam NEET - scheduled on May 5.
“At least I have one card to show. I am happy,” Guru on obtaining an Aadhaar card tells a leading daily. "I will be a proud Indian citizen when I get my passport," he adds. Ghalib needs an Indian passport in case he has to go abroad for studies. "If I don’t qualify here, I would like to go abroad. A college in Turkey may give me scholarship later on," Guru's son was quoted as saying. Ghalib says he wants to fulfil his father's dream. "We learn from the mistakes of the past. My father could not pursue his medical career (at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences). I want to complete it," he says. Ghalib credits his mother for protecting him from militancy and terror outfits abroad. His father Guru was hanged on February 9, 2013, for the attack on Parliament on December 13, 2001. Terror outfits often use his name to push youths to take up arms and avenge his hanging.

“The credit goes to my mother. She created an isolated space for me ever since I was in class fifth. She always said that even if someone said anything to me, I shouldn’t react. My priority is my mother and not what people say," Ghalib says. He also says that he never faced harassment from military personnel and they often encourage him to fulfil his dream of becoming a doctor.
Ghalib takes inspiration from his maternal grandfather who did post-graduation in history more than half a century ago.
