Pune, October 22: Following the Amritsar train accident which claimed 61 lives after the DMU train coming from Pathankot ran over people standing on railway tracks, the Pune railway authorities are carrying out a drive to avoid such kind of disaster in the city. According to a report published in Hindustan Times, a day before the train tragedy in Amritsar, the Central railways issued eviction notices to 55 slum hutments near Pimpri station. Manoj Jhawar, PRO, Central railways, Pune division told Hindustan Times, “A survey has been conducted on the number of encroachments along the railway tracks which could be dangerous.” According to the report, the end of the platforms of five stations of the city are barricaded for passengers to use the foot over bridge (FOB). In addition to this dugouts have also been created near the railway tracks. People living near the track used to ease themselves on the railway lines. The railways have identified slums at Pimpri, Chinchwad, Akurdi and Talegaon stations as black spots on the route between Pune and Lonavla. Nagsen Nagar near Akurdi and Dalvi Nagar slums are closest to the railway track. The boundary wall at Nagsen Nagar was broken to create a pathway leading towards the tracks.
