Bhopal, Sep 14: Barkatullah University in Bhopal will launch a three-month course to 'prepare' girls to be Adarsh Bahu (ideal bride) from the next academic session. The varsity will start the Adarsh Bahu course in the departments of psychology, sociology and women’s studies as it believes the move will empower women. 30 girls will be given admission in the first batch.

Vice-chancellor of the university said the motive behind the step is to make women aware about the new environment that they may come across after marriage. “As a university, we have a few responsibilities towards society, as well. We should not be limited to academics alone. “It is a part of women empowerment," he added. As far as the syllabus is concerned, the Vice-chancellor said related topics from sociology, psychology and other subjects would be included. "Our aim is that after completing the courses, girls should be in a better position to understand the dynamics of families. It is our effort to bring about a positive change in society," he was quoted as saying.

Professor KN Tripathi, who heads the psychology department, called the proposal of Adarsh Bahu course a 'noble thought' and said the Vice-chancellor wants to a make difference in society. Professor Asha Shukla of women’s studies said she was not aware of any such move. Reacting to the course, an educationist said the Barkarullah University should better try to improve infrastructure, exams, classes and address students' concerns.
